The artisans apply a light oil varnish finish to enhance the wood’s natural beauty and sheen, bringing out the wood grain’s intrinsic contrasts. This thin layer also protects your jewel from staining and water damage so that you can enjoy it for a very long time.

Our Maker Khun Noi – Wood Carving is Art

Apart from cotton and silk, Northern Thailand is also renowned for its craftsmanship in woodwork, construction, furniture, religious ornaments, and jewelry.┬áThere’s something to the warm feel and texture of natural wood that has fascinated humanity for centuries.

Mrs. Noi is another OTOP (One Tambon One Product) registered artisan producer discovered by Metiisto Fashion. Her workshop is located in the Baan Thawai craftsmen village’s vicinity, whose artisans are renowned for their woodcarving. Here, she continues to create her amazing artisan wooden jewelry pieces.

Rings, bangles, bracelets, earrings, and jewelry boxes made from hardwoods such as teak, coconut, mango, tamarind, etc., are handcrafted with precision. Their old fashioned hand lathes are perfectly suited to create some of the finest jewelry and ornaments, excelling through their simplicity, bringing the natural beauty of the wood grain to the foreground.

Sustainable Wood Harvesting

Several tropical hardwood species are used for different purposes – from furniture over ornaments to jewelry. The most commonly used types of wood are mango, teak, low pine, jackfruit, and tamarind – though there are many others less known internationally. Due to the large variety of materials used, these artisan wood earrings are unique! Also, coconut is eagerly used by our artisan friends due to its intrinsic hardness and durability.

The tropical hardwood industry is a multi-million dollar industry. Because of this, deforestation – pushed by both overdemand and greed – has always been of major concern. Luckily, Thailand successfully combats illegal logging within its forests, severely reducing illegal cutting from wild sources. Reforestation is another significant factor in combatting the depletion of our natural woodlands. You can read all about it here.

Hardwoods used in the fabrication of jewelry and other artifacts need to be of a certain age. It is Khun Noi’s deliberate choice to only harvest timber that has naturally come to the end of its lifecycle. In combination with the strict registration measures for tropical hardwoods in Thailand, this factor guarantees that all of our artisan wooden jewelry comes from sustainable sources. So, you can buy with a clear conscience at Metiisto Fashion.
